A pedagogical review of Palestine in academia: The Teaching Palestine conference at Birzeit University

 

The Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies and the Institute of Women’s Studies at Birzeit University, in cooperation with the Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas Studies at San Francisco State University, organized an international conference, entitled “Teaching Palestine: Pedagogical Praxis and the Indivisibility of Justice,” on March 20, 2018.

Symposium examines state, future of the Palestinian cause

 

The Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies at Birzeit University, in cooperation with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, organized a symposium entitled “Complex Issues of the Palestinian Cause: The Question of Representation, Autonomy, and Future Scenarios,” on December 16, 2017. The symposium was facilitated and commentated by the Professor of Cultural Studies and International Studies Dr. Ghassan Al-Khatib.

Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies hosts Canada’s Representative to the Palestinian Authority

 

As part of the Diplomacy Meeting Series, Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies hosted Canada’s Representative to the Palestinian Authority Mr. Douglas Scott Proudfoot on Thursday, Nov. 16. Mr. Proudfoot delivered a lecture on Canadian- Palestinian relations attended by a number of students, faculty members and other distinguished guests. Notable Professor at Birzeit University Dr. Murad Shaheen moderated the seminar.

IALIIS hosts the French Consul-General in Jerusalem as part of the diplomatic meetings series

 

On Thursday, October 10, 2017, Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies hosted an open discussion between the French Consul-General in Jerusalem, Mr.Pierre Cochard, and a number of graduate students majoring in International Studies and faculty staff at Birzeit University. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Ghassan Al-Khatib and comes as part of a series of diplomatic lectures held at by the institute .

Book author discusses his work on role of popular politics in the Middle East

 

The Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science John Chalcraft presented on May 27, 2017 a lecture on the subject of his book “Popular Politics in the Making of the Modern Middle East” in a lecture organized by Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute of International Studies at Birzeit the university.

Chalcraft looked at how unorganized groups and citizens have long mobilized in defiance of authorities and forges a new narrative of change over time.

International Conference on Palestine in a Changing World

 

The Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute of International Studies at Birzeit University held on May 6-7, 2017 an international conference to discuss the question of Palestine under the current changes in the region and the international system. A number of local and international academics, researchers, and officials participated in the conference.

Maltese professor shares perspectives in the Refugee context

 

Critical analysis on the hierarchies of power in researches was offered in a lecture presented by the Professor of Youth and Community Studies in the University of Malta Maria Pisani. The lecture was organized by Birzeit University’s Institute of Community and Public Health, on April 6, 2017.

Visiting professor offers lecture series on gender and security issues

 

As part of the "Advancing Research and Teaching in Political Economy in the oPt", visiting professor Marsha Henry, a professor in the Gender Institute and Deputy Director of the Centre for Women, Peace and Security at the London School of Economics, spoke at Birzeit University, in March 29-30, 2017, in lecture series by Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute for International Studies and the Council for British Research in the Levant.  Henry’s talks tackled the issues of gender, security, militarization and qualitative methodologies. 

Russian Ambassador visits BZU, lectures students on Russian Policies

 

Birzeit University President Abdellatif Abuhijleh met on March 27, 2017 with the Ambassador of the Representative Office of the Russian Federation to Palestine Aydar Aganin. Both parties discussed where they can cooperate in academia, exchange and research.

Book launch marks seven-year Palestinian Archive Project

 

The Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute of International Studies at Birzeit University celebrated on March 13, 2017 the seventh anniversary of the launch of Birzeit University’s Palestinian Archive Project, with a special book launch for “The Archival Globalization of Palestine: Towards a Chaotic Order,” which was edited by institute history professor Roger Heacock.
