Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies hosts Canada’s Representative to the Palestinian Authority

 

As part of the Diplomacy Meeting Series, Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies hosted Canada’s Representative to the Palestinian Authority Mr. Douglas Scott Proudfoot on Thursday, Nov. 16. Mr. Proudfoot delivered a lecture on Canadian- Palestinian relations attended by a number of students, faculty members and other distinguished guests. Notable Professor at Birzeit University Dr. Murad Shaheen moderated the seminar.

Representative Proudfoot presented a broad overview of the Canadian-Palestinian relations including trade, humanitarian aid and cooperation on development and security. He also expressed his hope that Canada’s contribution to the development of Palestine’s justice system and economic infrastructure will significantly accelerate the establishment of a successful independent state.

With regards to the future of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Mr. Proudfoot reiterated Canada’s position that a two-state solution is the only viable approach to solve the conflict and that there is time to reach a comprehensive peace agreement. He said that Canada will continue to support international efforts to establish a “viable, democratic & independent Palestinian state.” Mr. Proudfoot finished his speech by explaining Canada’s new Feminist International Assistance Policy that which, among other things, aims at combating gender-based violence around the globe. The speech ended with a question and answer session with the audience.
