Book author discusses his work on role of popular politics in the Middle East

 

The Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science John Chalcraft presented on May 27, 2017 a lecture on the subject of his book “Popular Politics in the Making of the Modern Middle East” in a lecture organized by Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute of International Studies at Birzeit the university.

Chalcraft looked at how unorganized groups and citizens have long mobilized in defiance of authorities and forges a new narrative of change over time.

Maltese professor shares perspectives in the Refugee context

 

Critical analysis on the hierarchies of power in researches was offered in a lecture presented by the Professor of Youth and Community Studies in the University of Malta Maria Pisani. The lecture was organized by Birzeit University’s Institute of Community and Public Health, on April 6, 2017.

Visiting professor offers lecture series on gender and security issues

 

As part of the "Advancing Research and Teaching in Political Economy in the oPt", visiting professor Marsha Henry, a professor in the Gender Institute and Deputy Director of the Centre for Women, Peace and Security at the London School of Economics, spoke at Birzeit University, in March 29-30, 2017, in lecture series by Ibrahim Abu Lughod Institute for International Studies and the Council for British Research in the Levant.  Henry’s talks tackled the issues of gender, security, militarization and qualitative methodologies.

Russian Ambassador visits BZU, lectures students on Russian Policies

 

Birzeit University President Abdellatif Abuhijleh met on March 27, 2017 with the Ambassador of the Representative Office of the Russian Federation to Palestine Aydar Aganin. Both parties discussed where they can cooperate in academia, exchange and research.

Jordanian Representative Expounds on Palestine-Jordan Ties

 

As part of its Diplomacy Meetings, Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies, in cooperation with the Political Science Department, hosted the Jordanian Representative to Palestine Mr. Khalid Al-Shawbkah on Thursday, February 23, 2017, and organized a lecture on the Jordanian foreign policy and the Jordanian – Palestinian relations.

The European Union and the Arab Israeli Conflict

Dr. Gresh discussed European foreign policy regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict from 1969 to the present. In particular, he pointed to drastic changes that took place in the Middle East and which reshaped European foreign policy towards the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The European Union: Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP)

 

During his lecture, Dr. Abu Khalaf discussed what the common foreign and security policy is, its objectives and operations. And in the second part of the lecture he opened the floor for discussion with students regarding the 2009 annual report from the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to the European  Parliament on the main aspects and basic choices of the  CFSP.

European population crisis?

Dr. Hogan started withemphasizing that a high level in death rates and a low birth rate doesn’t lead to a high growth rate. Whereas in Europe we are confronted with a decline in the infant mortality rate and the survivorship is going  up, thus old people are living longer and this affects the population structure of Europe. He also remarks that eventually all the worlds’ population will age and this started in the developed countries and in the future Africa and Asia will experience this.
