Enhancing the political representation of Palestinian refugees in the West Bank and Gaza Strip

The project, which started in mid January 2015 and which should end in mid September 2015, will contribute to enhancing the political representation of refugees in the camps by conducting research which uses as its foundation political representation as one of the most fundamental of human rights.

Launch of the African Studies Program

In cooperation with the Representative Office of South Africa in Ramallah, IALIIS organized a session on the 27th of April 2015, to discuss the foundations of academic cooperation between Africa and Palestine, in order to launch the African Studies Program at IALIIS. The project aims at filling the knowledge gap between Palestine and South Africa, learning from the South African experience of liberation, and adopting the strategies that ended the Apartheid regime in South Africa. Workshop on: “The EU: Between Common Policies and International System”

The Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies announces the holding of a symposium featuring students, faculty and professionals at Birzeit University entitled: “The EU: Between Common Policies and International System” This event is based on a course offered this semester by IALIIS “The European Union: Unique Phenomenon”. Twelve students will present their research papers, to be commented by experts.

Beyond Alienation: Capitalism, Structural Genocide and the Search for Social Justice

 
Garry Leech and Terry Gibbs, from Cape Breton University, discussed how the nature of contemporary capitalism inherently generates inequality and structural violence. Given that more than 10 million people a year needlessly die under the capitalist system, Leech argued that global capitalism constitutes a form of genocide. Within this framework, Terry Gibbs explored how a shift in values both at the level of individual consciousness and at a structural level will be required to move towards a more sustainable and socially just world.

International Sanctions on Russia and their Effect on Russia’s Role in the Arab World

Dr. Nimer Rizeq, from Kazan Federal University, talked about the geopolitical role of Russia, and explained that the Ukrainian crisis is one of the main reasons behind the imposed sanctions on Russia. He also highlighted that the European Union would get adversely affected by the sanctions given the economic relations between the EU and Russia, especially in fuel and energy fields.
