The workshop opened with the speech of Dr. Asem Khalil, Director of IALIIS, who welcomed the audience and participants, and pointed to the importance of the suggested workshop. He also talked about the series of workshops the Institute is organizing, while emphasizing the reasons behind conducting this particular workshop.  He also thanked everyone who has contributed in making this workshop possible, from speakers to donors.

Palestinian Refugees and the State: A Human and Political Capital or an Economic Burden?

 
The workshop opened with the speech of  Dr. Munir Qazaz, Vice President for Community Outreach, who welcomed the audience and participants and pointed the importance of the suggested topic. Following Dr. Munir, Dr. Asem Khalil, Director of IALIIS, gave a speech on the series of workshops the Institute is organizing, with emphasis on the reasons behind conducting this workshop, and the importance of the topic under discussion. “European Union: History, Law and Institutions”

 
The workshop opened with the speech of Dr. Samia Hilala, Vice President for Community Outreach, as she emphasized the importance of Birzeit University in discussing political and national issues, and the significance of viewing the political, economical and legal experiences of other countries. She further added that “the objective of this course, which the workshop is derived from, is to identify the EU as a regional  organization, shedding light on the evolution of the EU after World War II, in addition to EU institutions and the process of decision making on all levels.”

IDRC Policies and Projects on Refugees

 
Roula El-Rifai a Senior Program Specialist, Middle East Unit at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) presented an overview of the IDRC focus on Palestinian Refugees and the Middle East peace process. She mentioned the importance of policy papers versus research projects.
She stated that the key research projects are concentrated on compensation, absorption of Palestinian refugees and public opinion.
