Curricula Description

1. Strategic Communication Techniques and Skills

This course will present practical experiences in effective strategic communication, including verbal and non-verbal communication, body language, and the use of social media in communication. It will also address basic knowledge and skills in international and diplomatic communication, and communication in conflicts and dispute resolution. Moreover, the course will provide communication skills in team work with focus on diversity and gender with extensive use of cases and practical experiences and real life cases.

2. Strategic Thinking

This course will focus on the concept of strategic thinking and strategic interactions. The course introduces the participants to the basic tools of Game Theory and its applications to business choices. The participants will participate in game evaluation and differentiating between simultaneous and sequential solutions while dealing with the prisoner’s dilemma. Additionally, the course provides cases to evaluate strategic behavior and building scenarios.

3. Strategic Planning

This course shall focus on the planning skills as a tool for social, economic and political issues, since it focuses on strategic planning as a tool for change. In this course, several main issues in strategic planning will be presented, such as the notion of planning; its principles and its elements, an analysis of the internal and external environment, decision making theories and methods, community participation and its role in community planning, and the local plans and their correlation with the national plans.

4. Negotiation

This course will focus on the theory and practice of negotiation skills and facilitation, including building the capacity to manage teams and groups. The course also aims to provide the participants with basic and classic issues in the field including distributive and integrative bargaining, the cognitive processes that inhibit or facilitate effectiveness in negotiating, as well as more complex issues including multiparty negotiations, third-party negotiations, agency and ethics, cross-cultural negotiations, and innovative thinking. This course heavily emphasizes experiential learning through student participation in a variety of exercises and role-plays. Research on negotiations and conflict will be used to supplement this learning. Throughout the course, participants will be placed into numerous realistic negotiation settings, where they will have to prepare for, participate in, and analyze their negotiations.

5. Public Diplomacy and Diplomacy in Practice

This course aims to provide the participants with the necessary knowledge about diplomacy and its different definitions, the relationship between diplomacy from one side and international politics, international relations, and international law from the other side. The course also provides an in-depth understanding of the impact of the contemporary media on the diplomatic system and the internal and external politics.

6. International Conflicts and Disputes

This course will address the theory and practice of dispute resolution with focus on the alternative means for dispute resolution in Palestine, including arbitration, mediation, and negotiations. The informal/tribal justice system will also be explored along with possible methods of creating better linkages between the formal and tribal systems. Additionally, the course presents the current international conflicts, methods of analysis, and reasons behind conflicts. Moreover, this course will look at the reconciliation process and the key challenges in transforming personal, social and structural relationships that have been damaged or destroyed by conflict.

7. Contemporary International Issues

The focus in this course will be on international issues with focus on the change of the international system after the collapse of the Soviet Union and its impact on the social, economic and political aspects worldwide, in the Arab world, and more specifically on the Palestinian case. The course will address a number of topics including human rights, globalization, international trade, international terrorism, and weapons of mass destruction.

8. Corporate Diplomacy

This course helps build the capabilities that can help the participants to safeguard their firm’s reputation and value, and to make the development of stakeholder relationships a key strategic endeavor throughout the organization. The course focuses on topics of global leadership, crisis communication with techniques to influence public perception and effectively communicate during business crisis, stakeholder mapping and analysis and emotional intelligence.

9. National Identity and Nation Branding

This course will address a number of topics related to national identity and nation branding and their relationship to the theory and practice of public diplomacy and to related areas such as marketing and public relations. It aims to provide an intellectual foundation and the tools needed to analyze contemporary branding and nation branding techniques, applications and issues, and to provide real world examples for use as tools to define the concepts and experience the applications.

10. Political and international communication

This course examines international communication and international media through identifying the role of media and what normative standards can be used to evaluate the news media. The participants in this course will also learn about the transformation of the news industry by economic and technological pressure. The course also focuses on the role of international media on the international relations, conflicts management and external politics. Moreover, it explores the significance of media in the international conduct of both war and peace.
