The Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies extends an invitation for participation in the online seminar, “From the Monroe Doctrine to Venezuela: The United States’ Violence in Latin America and the Caribbean.” The seminar will be held today, Monday, January 5, 2026, at 7:00 PM, via Zoom through the link below. Simultaneous interpretation will be available in Arabic and English. The event will also be livestreamed on the Institute’s Facebook and YouTube platforms.

The seminar examines the long history of violent interventions by the United States in Latin America and the Caribbean, along with their political, economic, and social consequences. Specifically, the seminar analyzes the declared assault on Venezuela, culminating in the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro.

The seminar will host historian and journalist Dr. Vijay Prashad, Executive Director of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Editor-in-Chief of LeftWord Books, and Chief Correspondent for Globetrotter Media. He is the author of several books, including The Darker Nations: A People’s History of the Third World and The Poorer Nations: A Possible History of the Global South.

The seminar is part of a new series launched by the Institute, entitled, “Selected Topics from Latin America.”
