Roundtable about Israel's decision to deport members of the Palestinian Legislative Council from East Jerusalem

 

 

On 20 September 2010, The Forced Migration Refugees Unit (FMRU) at the Ibrahim Abu-Lughod Institute of International Studies (IALIIS) organized a Roundtable in which the Legal Advisor at the Red Cross, Dr. Cordula Droege, Al-Haq General Director Mr. Shahwan Jabareen, and Dr. Yaser Ammouri from the Faculty of Law and Public Administration at BZU have participated.

The roundtable addressed Israel's decision to deport members of the Palestinian Legislative Council from East Jerusalem and its legal and political dimensions, as well as its impact on the Palestinian existence in Jerusalem.

Dr. Droege stated that this policy is a grave violation to article (49) of the 4thGeneva Convention. She added that article (22) of the 4th Geneva Convention stipulates that restrictions on movement should be based on concrete  security reasons. She referred to the Hague Regulation of 1907 that prohibits the occupying power to ask for the loyalty of the occupants. She noted that since 1967 Israel started to apply its deportation and transfer policy to impose it as a reality on the ground
